One of the most successful sitcoms in network TV history, The Cosby Show earned the one Nielsen rating for five consecutive years, and in its eight seasons it never dropped out of the Top twenty. Joined with the hit comedy series Cheers, the 2 shows made Thunights a weekly ratings sweep for NBC The Cosby Show is set in a Long Island brownstone where Heathcliff’Cliff’ Huxtable ( Bill Cosby ) and his better half Clair ( Phylicia Rashad ) live with their 5 kids – Sondra ( Sabrina Le Beauf ), Denise ( Lisa Bonet ), Theo ( Malcolm-Jamal Warner ), Vanessa ( Tempestt Bledsoe ), and Rudy ( Keshia Knight Pulliam ).

Cliff is a preferred obstetrician / gynecologist who runs his practice out of the home’s basement (that has its own street entrance), whilst Clair is a successful solicitor with a local legal firm. In the 1st season, Sondra is not seen because she is attending Princeton, but she and her hubby (and later man) Elvin (Geoffrey Owens) become major characters in successive seasons.

Almost all of the comic relief derives from Cliff and Clair’s struggles with their youngsters and the frequently foolish things they do, but sometimes, the family gets along very well. Bad language is non-existent in the series, and it highlights a multitude of African-American idols like Stevie Wonder, Lena Horne, and Sammy Davis Jr.

Believing he does not need to go to university, Theo is given a memorable lesson (using Monopoly money) by Cliff – prompting him to promise to do his best from this time on. This episode is especially fascinating given the assorted facets of the family and home that are different to the rest of the series.
